Open Data Contest 2020


The fourth annual Nova Scotia Open Data Contest was held March 7-8, 2020 in partnership with the School of Information Management and the Rowe School of Business (Faculty of Management, Dalhousie University).

The Challenge

Coinciding with International Open Data Day, students, entrepreneurs, and citizens were challenged to develop innovative solutions focused on healthcare or the economy using at least one Nova Scotia Open Data dataset.
Submissions could be:
  •  An application;
  • A predictive model; or
  • A visualization.

The Winners

The contest began March 7th, coinciding with International Open Data Day, and saw 22 teams working over the weekend to develop their solutions.
On Sunday, March 8th, the teams, with participants from Acadia University, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia Community Colleges, Saint Mary’s University, and the community, delivered their 2-minutes pitches to the judging panel.

First Place

First place was awarded to Leah Fulton, Nathan Slater, and Charles Williams for creating an application that displays ambient air quality concentrations on an interactive map of Nova Scotia.

Second Place

Rishab Gupta, Nawaz Hussain, Ganesh Joorawon, and Gaganpreet Singh earned second place for their application focused on optimizing recyclable waste management in the province.

Third Place

Third place went to Keshava Pallavi Gone and Raghavarao Neelam who developed an application that brings together health data from different health-care resources into a single solution.

Special Mention

Jatin Mahajan, Sai Kumar Nerella, Navjot Singh and Akshey Singhal were recognized for their predictive model that examined trends and demographics of specific diseases.

Special Mention

Isaac Greenberg, Yoon Park, Gwen McFallon and Sandrico Provo were acknowledged for the creation of a chatbot that answers non-emergency health concerns.
