Internal Successes
Releasing open data provides opportunities for government to support
transparency and accountability, improve business functions and processes, increase citizen
engagement, and support internal knowledge and collaboration.
This page highlights innovative internal uses of Nova Scotia's open data. If you have used data from the Nova Scotia Government's Open Data Portal and would like to share more information, please get in touch with the Open Data Program and tell us more!
Municipal Affairs: Municipal Profile and Financial Condition Indicators Report
Municipal Affairs now publishes
the Municipal Profile and Financial Condition Indicators as a combined PDF
report to help provide insight into the financial condition and health of Nova
Scotia communities. These indicators include measures such as reliance on
government transfers, total number of deficits, operating reserve, and
liquidity for each municipality.
When Municipal Affairs releases
this report, they also make the data behind the report available on the Nova
Scotia Government’s Open Data Portal. By proactively releasing the datasets on the portal, the
department reduces requests for the background data, improves overall
accountability and transparency, and supports broader analysis and reuse of the
data by the public.
Service Nova Scotia: Co-operatives Report
Preparing annual Co-operatives reports was very labour
intensive and time consuming. By the time that the reports were published on
the website, the data was not current and the information in the PDF format is
static. The information in these reports could not be
updated even though we continued to receive late filings relating to that
reporting year.
Audrey Gay identified a better way – by using
the Open Data Portal to provide the public with easy access to this information
as well as the ability to use Portal functions to sort, chart and graph this
information.
This initiative saved over 100 hours each year,
leading to more efficient internal processes, and an increased client
experience.
