In honour of African Heritage Month, the Nova Scotia Archives is pleased to present a digital version of the Nominal Roll of Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men, No. 2 Construction Battalion (March 1917), the only battalion of Black soldiers raised in Canada during the First World War. This is data of petitions made to government by individuals or groups of people seeking grants of Crown Land in early Nova Scotia, 1765-1800. The database contains 11,464 names of intending settlers, as identified in 1,890 surviving petitions; data fields also include year of each petition, location of land by county, brief description of land applied for, and notations concerning related documentation (e.g. warrants to survey, surveyor’s reports, licences to occupy, etc.).

The database contains 2,595 entries and is searchable on the name of the deceased, date of death, cause of death, name of mine (where known), type of mine, and location (community and/or county) in Nova Scotia. Only 7 names have been identified for the years prior to 1866.

The Government of Nova Scotia helps identify, protect and preserve built heritage throughout the province. The Heritage Property Program was created to assist Nova Scotians to better understand the heritage values of our unique properties and to better preserve these heritage assets. It is an outcome of the Heritage Property Act.

Fatality Reports were created for 328 individuals whose bodies were recovered at the site of the disaster. These files form a unique sub-set within the records of the Medical Examiner for the City of Halifax and Town of Dartmouth (RG 41, Series C, Vols. 75, 76 & 76A) held at the Nova Scotia Archives.

A fully searchable database containing 3865 names of Nova Scotian women and men that signed 18 petitions calling for the franchise to vote be extend to women the same as men in 1918.
